Nuns’ treatment of children at a residential care home was “bordering on the psychotic”, Northern Ireland’s Historical Abuse Inquiry has been told.
Give me that old time religion… We are told constantly that without religion there can be no morality. This is nonsense, of course, but it is worse. It is a slap in the face for all those millions over the years who have been abused, injured, killed in the name of religion. The world’s churches present themselves as smiling benevolent enterprises and there are, truly, some extremely good and generous people who belong to them. There is, though, an undercurrent of evil in the catholic church; there is more corruption than the global Mafias, there is more child abuse than all the other institutions put together and there is an unhealthy obsession with other people’s sex lives to the extent that ‘almost psychotic’ is a gross understatement. Anybody who encountered the Sisters of Nazareth as a child will know at least one person who was abused by the hatchet-faced haridans. The Historic Abuse inquiry – long overdue – will bring us more horror stories.
